Montserrat Commencement 21

  • About

Montserrat College of Art is a small college located in the North Shore region. Every year, the college holds a commencement ceremony for its graduating seniors. Despite the fact that the pandemic was ongoing, Montserrat’s administration found a way to hold this event.

  • Goals/Objectives

Create a sense of unity across secondary materials (program, envelope, and invitation) using cohesive type and graphics. Maintain the school’s newly revamped branding.

research

Prior to my work on the collateral materials, I had a meeting with a member of the college’s administration. During the meeting, we discussed details about the ceremony. Because we were still in the middle of the pandemic, the ceremony was set to be a drive-in event. That detail influenced my thinking about abstract symbols taken from things like soundwaves, wheels, and headlights (yes, seriously!).

Color Palette

In terms of color, I had to maintain the school’s branding while also showing some positivity to the event. I played with a variety of saturated, poppy colors, until I landed on a secondary color from the school’s palette.

Typographic solutions

Using some of the original graphics and letters from the school’s logo, I created some typographic solutions that could go on the printed materials.

Final Symbol

The final symbol combines elements from the school’s branding with graphic symbols from previous exploration. The Montserrat M stands strong with the graphic headlights from the drive-in event.

Final Deliverables

With the symbol approved, I was able to connect the invitation and program to the Commencement Ceremony.
