Goals/Objectives
Create a visual vocabulary using type and images that is consistent across different formats and marketing materials ( bus poster, splash page, and Twitter graphic) for this episode of the series.
research
First, I did some research by watching the episode and finding images that reflected aspects of the show. The images show a variety of different translations of some of the elements.
sketches
Two things that stuck out to me from my research were phytoplankton blooms and bioluminescent fish. With the phytoplankton, they took over swaths of the ocean in intricate swirls. With the fish, they glowed in the dark. I drew both in my sketchbook to get a sense for how they worked.
phytoplankton
The phytoplankton endured a series of changes. I tried using some of the images I found in my initial research, but those were too small. So, I recreated some of the forms in Illustrator to get the feeling of the blooms across.
Dragonfish
The dragonfish endured a series of changes. Through my research, I found this interesting x-ray image of the fish. The image was too small to use for anything, but it could still be used as influence for refined sketches. I broke the image down into various shapes, eventually simplifying it until it was just razor sharp teeth and a beady eye.
final version
In the end, the blackdragonfish is a cool creature, but not many people would recognize it; it’s too obscure. To fix this issue, I added a lure with a glowing light, so the creature resembles an angler fish (like the one in Finding Nemo).
